Find a Park or Pier and Watch Some Fireworks in McHenry and Lake County!

There are so many great things about summer—finally taking your boat out, ditching your heavy winter clothing, enjoying the lake breeze on the pier with some friends and family… The list goes on, but there’s one thing about summer that we really love: fireworks!

Everyone knows the Fourth of July is the big fireworks event of the year, but there are plenty of other fireworks displays planned all around Lake and McHenry counties throughout the whole season. Here’s a list of some of the displays you can look forward to this year.

June 2-4, 2017: Harvard Milk Days

Location: Milky Way Park, 201 West Front Street, Harvard, IL 60033

Start Time: 10:00pm

Admission: Fireworks are free; other activities may charge a fee

Event Details:
This annual festival in Harvard, IL lasts three days and features fireworks all three nights. Smaller displays take place on Friday and Saturday, and the Grand Finale is on Sunday. Other attractions include a carnival, 2-hour parade, petting zoo, races, contests, music, and food. See their event site for details.

June 10, 2017: Lake Villa Celebration of Summer

Location: Lehmann Park, 148 Cedar Ave, Lake Villa, IL 60046

Start Time: Dusk

Admission: Fireworks are free; other activities may charge a fee

Event Details:
This festival last through both June 9 and 10, with fireworks on the second day. These fireworks are known to rival many July 4th displays in the area! Other attractions include a rib fest, and auto show, and live music.

July 1, 2017: McHenry Independence Day Fireworks

Location: Petersen Park, 4300 Peterson Park Rd, McHenry, IL 60050

Start Time: Dusk

Admission: Free

Event Details:
McHenry holds its Fourth of July fireworks display on the weekend closes to the date. This year, that’s July 1st. If you want to see an impressive fireworks display but are busy on weekdays, this may be a perfect way for you to celebrate the Fourth!

July 1, 2017: Celebrate Fox Lake

Location: Lakefront Park Building, 71 Nippersink Blvd, Fox Lake, IL 60020

Start Time: Parade at 2:00 PM, festivities at 3:00 PM, fireworks at dusk

Admission: Free

Event Details:
Fox Lake is celebrating its 110th anniversary! A parade leads from Grant High School to the Towne Center Plaza. Then, festivities start at the Lakefront Park building and include a beer tent, food and craft vendors, face painting, bouncy equipment, face painting, live entertainment, and more. Finally, at dusk the fireworks begin on the northwest corner of Nippersink Lake. You’ll get a great view at Lakefront Park!

July 8, 2017: Pistakee Bay Fireworks

Location: Pistakee Lake, 801 Oak Grove Rd, Johnsburg IL 60051

Start Time: Evening

Admission: Donations accepted to fund fireworks

Event Details:
The Pistakee Bay Fireworks is another annual firework display held on a weekend close to the Fourth of July. This display takes place on Pistakee Lake, and is a sight to see from land or water. It’s a great event for if you can’t make any July 4th displays. Alternatively, you can attend displays both on the 4th and the weekends before and after for a month full of fireworks! July 8, 2017: Fox River Grove Fireworks Celebration

Location: Picnic Grove Park, 598 Birch Ln, Fox River Grove, IL 60021

Start Time: Dusk

Admission: Free

Event Details:
Typically held the Saturday after Independence Day, this annual celebration of the founding of Fox River Grove has all sorts of festivities. Community organizations work together to offer music games, food, and drinks. Fireworks are then launched over the Fox River, creating a spectacular display.

August 5 2017: Venetian Night

Location: Dockers restaurant, 33 W. Grand Ave, Fox Lake, IL 60020

Start Time: 6:00 PM

Admission: Free

Event Details:
Venetian Night is an annual event hosted by Dockers restaurant in Fox Lake. You can dress your boat up for a Venetian-style boat parade or just watch, and there’s a block party featuring food, beverages, and dancing. The event is topped off with the Fireworks Finale at dusk.

August 12 2017: Lakemoor Fest

Location: Morrison Park, 233 Rand Rd, Lakemoor, IL, 60051

Start Time: Fireworks at 9:30 PM

Admission: Free, though many attractions charge fees

Event Details:
Lakemoor Fest is a 3-day festival running August 11-13, with a fireworks display on Saturday, August 12th. This festival has everything including carnival rides, food, games, a craft and flea market, live music, and more. Flashing Thunder Fireworks Spectacular headlines the event with a fireworks display you won’t soon forget!

September 3, 2017: 69th Annual Jubilee Days Festival

Location: Shiloh Park, 25th St. & Emmaus Ave, Zion, IL 60099

Start Time: Festivities 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Admission: Free

Event Details:
The Jubilee Days Festival in Zion is Lake County’s largest Labor Day parade, lasting from Saturday, September 2nd through Monday, September 4th. The festival started as a harvest celebration and has grown to include a marathon, a beauty pageant, an ice cream social, a parade, and more. The fireworks are on Sunday, but all three days are worth checking out!

October 7, 2017: Johnsburg’s Celebration in the Park

Location: Sunnyside Park, 1515 Channel Beach Ave, Johnsburg, IL 60051

Start Time: 5:00pm

Admission: Free

Event Details:
Johnsburg hosts its Celebration in the Park every first Saturday of October. Attractions typically include food and beverages, hayrides, a beer tent, and more. Festivities start around 5, and fireworks start at dusk.

From a Chair on a Pier or a Blanket in a Park, Go See Some Fireworks in 2017!

Now that you have a selection of events at your disposal, go see some fireworks! Bring some blankets and spread out at the park, or watch from your boat or pier when there are fireworks displays on the waterway.
